Tea Named Most Missed Product by BCS Customers!

PG Tips Tea Bags 240Recently we ran the BCS survey, which gave our customers the opportunity to tell us what they think of our service and provide feedback on where we can improve.

We also asked customers to let us know what the one product was they struggled to live without, and from this we established that a good cup of tea was the winner by quite a margin.

Top British brands such as Tetley Tea, PG Tips and Yorkshire Tea were named most frequently in the survey, closely followed by Twinings, Scottish Blend and Typhoo.

As we all know a cup of tea is best served with a biscuit by it's side, so it's no surprise that biscuits like McVities Ginger Nuts, Digestives and Jammie Dodgers also appeared in the top 10.

Chilled food like bacon, sausages and cheese came in at number 2, proving that proper bacon sandwiches and a full English fry up are hard to replace.

Most the of the items in the top 10 were what we expected, with the only surprise being that Heinz Baked Beans were way down the list at number 8. This is one of our most popular items on the website, so we thought the craving for beans on toast would have pushed this product at least into the top 5!

If your top 10 would be different, or if you agree with the list why not leave us a comment and let us know?

Top 10

  1. Tea – 20%
  2. Chilled (including cheese, bacon, sausages, meats and black pudding) – 12%
  3. Chocolate – 8%
  4. Marmite – 6%
  5. Condiments – (including Heinz salad Cream, HP Sauce,  HeinzTomato Ketchup and Branston Pickle) – 4%
  6. Bisto Gravy Granules - 3.5%
  7. Crisps (including Walkers, Hula Hoops) – 3.1%
  8. Heinz Baked Beans – 2.5%
  9. Biscuits – (including McVities, Rich Teas, Ginger Nuts and Jammie Dodgers) – 2.3%
  10. Oxo Stock Cubes – 1.4%

British Food Fortnight

British Food FortnightFrom the 21st September to the 6th October it is British Food Fortnight (BFF) here in the UK.

This celebration of British food happens every year, with the focus being on celebrating the harvest and all the amazing food that it produces.

The first British Food Fortnight was held in 2002 as a modern day harvest festival. The aim was to reinvigorate this national celebration which was quickly dying out.

If you live in the UK there are many ways you can get involved and help celebrate; such as making the effort to shop at local grocers, butchers and farm shops (if you don't already), or perhaps getting your local community together to enjoy a feast of all the British food produced in your local area.

If you live outside the UK there are still ways you can support BFF. Why not introduce some of your non British friends to your favourite British meals? You can order all of the ambient ingredients through us, and many of you can also order from our chilled range, including homemade and locally produced cakes, pies, meats and cheeses.

You can also show your support via Twitter by downloading their specially designed 'Twibbon', as well as posters and stickers.

All the details are on the BFF website, so have a read and decide how you want to get involved!

Celebrate the Arrival of the Royal baby!

This week saw yet another momentous event in British history - the birth of the royal baby.

Since 2011 there have been plenty of royal events to get excited about; The Diamond Jubilee, the royal wedding, the Queens Coronation Festival and now a new Prince. So it's safe to say that this is a perfect time to celebrate!

Britons are well know for hosting great parties, and events like this are the perfect excuse to pull out the union jack flags and royal memorabilia we all have stashed away at the back of the cupboard, and enjoy a quintessentially British barbeque, picnic or tea party.

If you live abroad having these kind of events can be a great way to spend time with friends and family, as well as letting the world know that you're British and proud of it.

So whether you prefer to celebrate with a cup of PG Tips and a buttered crumpet, or with a glass of Pimms and a cheddar cheese sandwich, make sure you pull out all the stops at your celebration like only we Brits can!

Celebrate Wimbledon With a Glass of Pimms!

Pimms No 1 70clWhat a fantastic weekend of sport we've had here in the UK. Not only did the Lions Rugby team convincingly beat Australia in the final test, but a British man has finally won Wimbledon!

Having waited 77 years for the latter to happen it's understandable that today the country is talking of nothing else!

Wimbledon is a uniquely British affair, and its crisp green grass courts, strawberries and cream on demand and enthusiastic crowd make it one of the most popular sporting tournaments in the world.

However, with the success of the Olympics it was hard to imagine anything even coming close to the emotional connection the country had with sport last summer, but yesterday proved that theory wrong.

Yet again the success of British sport has brought us together as a nation, and enhanced the already positive feeling that comes with being British.

So why not celebrate yet another British sporting success story with a glass of Pimms and a bowl of strawberries and cream wherever you are in the world!

The Best British BBQ Foods This Summer

Today we have another blog post from our guest blogger David Ryan, and as summer is (sort of) approaching, he's written all about enjoying a BBQ with all British products.

The sun is out and it is time to dust off the barbeque to enjoy the great British summer. However, is it possible to have a tasty barbeque using only British-produced food? The answer is yes – and by choosing some of these best British barbeque foods you can ensure your barbeque is one people will remember for a long time.

British beef burgers

Beef burgers are an essential barbeque food during the British summer months and no barbeque is complete without the traditional burger in a bun. Luckily for those who want to buy British, the horsemeat scandal means it is easier to source and buy completely British burgers.

Whether it is the traditional beef burger or a more exotic burger using flavourings such as onion, chilli or even red wine, beef burgers can be found at British farm companies up and down the country. You can even make your own with the help of a hamburger machine now that would impress the guests this summer.

If you are feeling adventurous there are other burger options such as British boar burgers or even buffalo burgers for a different taste. For an even more satisfying burger experience it is extremely easy to make your own burgers using British beef mince and any good online recipe website.

British sausages

Britain is renowned for its superb range of sausages and no barbeque is complete without fresh, juicy, British-produced sausages sizzling away on the grille. The traditional pork sausage, sometimes matched up with apple flavouring, is probably the most common in the UK and is easily sourced from any number of local manufacturers and big supermarket chains.

The sheer range of sausage options available to the British barbeque fan is staggering; pork and leak, pork and red onion, venison, beef, Cumberland – the list is endless. However, the one thing they have in common is that they are barbeque favourites across the country once the sun comes out.

British lamb kebabs

Versatile and tasty, lamb kebabs are a simple addition to any barbeque and even add a splash of colour to the grille.

British lamb is some of the best in the world and tastes wonderful when it is nicely grilled on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. It can also lend plenty of variety to a barbeque because the lamb can be marinated in a selection of herbs and spices before being skewered and grilled.

Skewered with onions and vegetables such as pepper they are quick to cook and easy to eat making them one of the best barbeque foods around.

British chicken

Chicken can be one of the trickiest things to get right on the barbeque because for best results it is important to cook it slowly on a cooler part of the grille. This allows the outside to go crispy while the inside stays soft and succulent. Chicken can be marinated in tasty spices to give it the traditional barbeque flavour and it will pick up a smoky flavour from the barbeque process.

Some of the major supermarkets have agreed to source only British chicken in their stores and the benefits are obvious. Being able to track where the chicken comes from gives the buyer peace of mind about the conditions the chickens were reared in and the quality of the meat itself.

British chickens have some of the strictest standards in the world and as a result choosing British chicken is the perfect option for a summer barbeque.

British salmon

It may not be official Arbroath Smokie but salmon is a superb accompaniment to any barbeque and is easily sourced from British sellers. A small amount of preparation is recommended for salmon including marinating it in lemon zest, garlic or anything else you wish to flavour the fish with. Once prepared it only takes a short time to cook salmon on a barbeque until it flakes with a fork.

The important thing to remember when barbequing salmon is to either use foil or grille it on a medium heat. Follow this advice and British-sourced salmon can be a fantastic addition to any summer barbeque.

It is also important not to forget the most essential part of any BBQ, the condiments! Over in the British Corner Shop there is a whole host of condiments that would go great with all of the above mentioned foods. So break out those burgers, slice up those sausages and have a great British BBQ this summer.

British Sandwich Week

British Sandwich Week SaleIt's British Sandwich Week this week so to celebrate we have put a variety of sandwich ingredients on sale!

Sandwiches are without doubt one of the most popular lunchtime snacks, and since its introduction to the world back in the 18th Century, it has grown in popularity and is eaten all over the globe.

You can now go into any cafe, restaurant, bar, garage or supermarket and pick up a sandwich filled with a huge selection of different fillings, from classics such as cheese and ham, to more extravagant varieties like brie and cranberry.

Britain is probably most famous for having cucumber sandwiches during afternoon tea, but as most Brits know very few of us keep up this tradition. In reality it's BTL's, cheese toasties and club sandwiches that are eaten around Britain on a day to day basis.

With this in mind we've put a range of products on sale that would allow our customers to make some great sandwiches, such as; brown bread, white bread, rolls, sandwich thins, cheese, chutney, pastes, bacon and sausages.

If you fancy reading some history behind the sandwich take a look at this article from The Express online, which gives you 10 fun facts about the sandwich.

Our sale will end at midnight on Monday 20th May, so whether you like bacon, tuna, prawn, marmite or honey in your sandwich, make sure you celebrate with your favourite variety this week, and pay homage to this delicious and convenient snack!

Cornish CamembertWe've been making lots of improvements to the website over the last few weeks, and on Wednesday 1st of May we dropped the price of over 400 of our most popular products.

Tea V's Coffee

Today for the first time we have a guest blogger writing for us. David Ryan writes blogs about many different topics, and today is going to be discussing the age old argument of Tea V's Coffee! Being Brits this is a topic many of you will have opinions about so we hope you enjoy the blog!

If you have any comments feel free to let us know!

"Whether you’re a morning person or not, chances are you require a warm mug of tea or coffee to get you ready for the day. Whichever your desired drink is, both have their strong points.

There's no problem too big that can't be solved over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Steamy and wholesome, the humble cup of tea is the ultimate solace when times get tough and the weather turns chilly. A comfort blanket, a hug, a sanctuary; the cup of tea is a warm mug of love and happiness there to console, to heal or just to help you relax.

As you yawn, stretch and shield your eyes from the sun shining through your curtains, you couldn't ask for anything more than a
well brewed cup of tea to ease you into the morning. It's one of the simplest pleasures in life and should be savoured. How about a cup of tea, strawberry jam and freshly baked scones? The quintessentially British tradition would be incomplete without the staple fresh tea leaves brewed to perfection in a China teapot.

The embracing cup of Chai with its malty notes and it's time - honoured taste is
something to be rivalled.

Enter coffee. There are many
coffee choices out there, so whether you fancy a neat espresso, a creamy cappuccino or a tradition Americano, the old cup of Joe is a classic.

The golden nectar is the perfect complement to an advanced palette and considered the preferential pick me up. Known for its high caffeine levels, designed to give you a kick start, coffee is the ideal companion to see you through the mid-afternoon slump. Perky and powerful, a cup of coffee can be the most valuable sidekick in combating lethargy.

It can also act as the incentive for a date - just think of all the great romances which have evolved over the catalyst of coffee? Of all of the coffee shops in all of the world she walked into mine..that's some powerful stuff.

So whether you seek the solace of a builder's brew or crave the kick only coffee can provide, be sure to pop the kettle on and indulge."

Order Over £100 of Chilled Products and Your Shipping is 1/2 Price!

As you may know from our previous post, back in March we added a range of chilled products to our site, including proper British bacon, sausages, cheese and yogurts. Since then we have added more products to the range and have introduced a new shipping offer.

If you spend over £100 on chilled products your delivery costs will be halved. This offer obviously only applies to those countries where our chilled range is available (France, Germany, Monaco, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium and the UK), but we are currently looking to extend this list of countries very soon.

We’re pleased to be able to offer this range of chilled products, as we get a lot of feedback from customers telling us how much they miss items such as British bacon and sausages.

One of our customers who previously lived in various parts of Germany and is a vegetarian, told us that having access to Quorn would have been particularly useful, as in cities such as Munich vegetarian products were hard to come by.

This is why we’ve made sure we have a wide selection of Quorn products within our range, and as with all our other categories, we will be extending these ranges even further in the coming weeks.

If there are any products that you struggle to find where you live, and we don’t already have it on the website, please do let us know via our suggest a product form and we will do our best to source it for you!

If you'd like to read all the details about our shipping offer please visit our latest news pages.

New Chilled Range is Here!

Chilled Range Now Available To Select DestinationsIf you live abroad one of the things you probably enjoy the most is getting to experience the food and drink on offer in a new country. However, no matter how good the cuisine is there will always be a few items that you miss from home, and for British expats there tends to be one product in particular they miss the most.......bacon.

Before you moved away from home you probably never realised how much you'd miss it, but it's impossible to make a decent fry up or bacon sandwich with anything other than proper British bacon.

This is why we've been working very hard to launch our new chilled range, as its items like bacon, along with British sausages and cheese that are missed just as much, if not more, than ambient items like Heinz Beans and Branston Pickle.

Our chilled range was launched last Friday (15th March) and currently includes a variety of cheese, bacon, sausages, yogurts, butter, pies, pasties, Quorn and snacks from top brands you'd find in the UK.

So whether you crave a British fry up on a Saturday morning or a Ginsters Pork Pie in your packed lunch, we're here to help!

Due to restricted delivery times we can currently only offer our chilled range to France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, UK, Monaco, Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands. However, we are running further testing and hope to be able to extend this list of countries in the near future.

If you can think of any products that should be in our chilled range and aren’t, just let us know and we'll do our best to source the item for you!

Great Novelty Treats for Easter!

Cadbury Egg n Spoon Double ChocolateEaster, as we've said before, is the second most popular holiday in the UK, and being one of the few times in the year you're expected to eat chocolate it's easy to see why!

Every year top brands such as; Nestle, Mars and Cadbury battle it out to not only produce the best Easter egg range, but also to create a new novelty Easter treat.

For Mars this product is their Malteaster Bunny - a small individually wrapped chocolate bunny with a crunchy and creamy honeycomb filling. Undeniably delicious and if you're already a Malteasers fan you're sure to want to eat a whole bag of these!

To rival this Cadbury have also had their design team working hard and have come up a great novelty Easter product - Cadbury Egg n Spoon. This consists of four chocolate eggs filled with a divine fluffy chocolate mousse, which comes in a branded purple egg box.

Nestle have also launched their Aero Lamb, again a small individually wrapped treat, but this time in the shape of a lamb and filled with a traditional mint Aero filling.

So this year we really are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking our indulgent treat(s) for Easter, but for us the stand out product of the year has to be the Cadbury Egg n Spoon. Not only is it completely unique to anything else on the market, but being made of Cadbury chocolate it's sure to taste amazing!

We have plenty more novelty treats, cakes and eggs of all sizes within our Easter category, including Smarties Chicken, Milkybar Cow and Thorntons Bramble Model. So whether it’s for you, your partner or the kids you will definitely find something to help make this Easter a good one!

If you have an opinion on what you think is the best Easter product this year, leave a comment and let us know!

Cereal - A Quick and Simple Breakfast

Weetabix 24 BiscuitsEvery country tends to have a typical breakfast food they are most famous for; in France and Germany it's a continental style breakfast, whereas in America it's pancakes and maple syrup.

In the UK we're well known for enjoying a fry up, but actually, due to time retraints, it's more likely that the majority of us enjoy a bowl of cereal first thing in the morning.

Because of this continous demand for cereal the choice available is extremely extensive, so no matter what your taste or dietary needs there is a cereal designed to meet your requirements!

At BCS we have done our best to get as many types of cereal as possible into our breakfast selection, and so have split our range into 6 different categories: Hot Cereals, Traditional Cereals, Better For You, Cereal Snack, Childrens Cereal and Crunchy Cereal.

Below are our top 10 most popular products from these categories;

1. Nestle Shreddies
2. Shredded Wheat
3. Weetabix
4. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes
5. Special K
6. All Bran
7. Cheerios
8. Alpen - Reduced Sugar
9. Rice Krispies
10. Coco Pops

So, with such a range to choose from it's no wonder so many of us choose a quick and easy breakfast like this to start our day. Of course, at the weekend you can't go wrong with a good classic British fry up!

Red Lentil and Borlotti Bean Crumble

Red Lentil and Borlotti Bean CrumbleWith the severe winter weather that's hit the UK and much of Europe over the last couple of weeks, there's never been a more perfect time to create some warming winter meals to get you through until spring.

Meat eaters generally have a wider variety of choice when it comes to these kinds of recipes with hotpots, stews and casseroles commonly using chicken, pork and beef as the main ingredient. So if you're a veggie and would like a little help coming up with some new comfort food dishes, then help is at hand! Our resident chef Hannah has come up with a great dish that'll be loved by both meat eaters and vegetarians a like.

Hannah's latest creation is a protein and fibre packed Red Lentil and Borlotti Bean Crumble. It's filling is made using red lentils, borlotti beans, herbs and stock, and Walkers Crisps and cashew nuts are used for the crumble.

If you'd like to see details for all of Hannah's recipes you can visit our recipes section on the website. We're lucky enough to have two recipes a month from Hannah, so keep an eye out for these on the site and on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

It's Never Too Late To Enjoy A Mince Pie!

Cadbury Occasions CartonToday here in the UK we've been hit with what the press are calling 'the big freeze' and most of the country is currently under a blanket of snow. For many other countries this much snow would not cause a problem, but with the mild conditions we experience 99% of the year, this sort of weather takes us a bit by surprise!

It does seem a bit of shame that we couldn't have had the snow a few weeks earlier and enjoyed it at Christmas, but it's nice to see the countryside looking so beautiful whatever month this wintery weather does come along.

If you're a big fan of Christmas but you didn't discover our website until it was too late to order for the big day, then you might be interested to have a look at our stock clearance category. It's full of many of our most popular festive products that are now at a hugely discounted price.

Many of the products in this category, although enjoyed at Christmas are just as nice to have throughout the rest of the year; such as Cadbury Occasions Biscuits, Quality Street tins and Giant Malteaser Tubes.

So if you missed having traditional British Christmas items at your house in 2012, then why not buy them now and not only get them at bargain prices, but also indulge yourself with a sneaky festive treat 11 months early!
